Fortune cookies, thank-you cards—even silly messages scribbled across sticky notes—allow kids to try out the power of words.

When children write, according to language arts textbook author Gail E. Tompkins, amazing things happen:

  • Kids have fun
  • They learn to express themselves artistically
  • The function and value of writing is explored
  • Imagination is stimulated
  • Telling stories helps clarify thinking
  • Reading and writing skills improve

Sound favorable? Then get your kids writing— on paper, on the computer, in diaries. Try these fun exercises:

Sticky note missives
Leave quick-stick notes in weird places (on the backs of cereal boxes, inside sock drawers) with funny and loving notes to family members.

“Hi Grandpa, thanks for taking me fishing…”
Buy (or make) special thank-you cards that your child can have on hand to dash off heartfelt thanks to grandparents, teachers and friends.

Kid comics
Let your kids put words into someone else’s mouth. Find funny drawings and photos for them to write captions. Creating their own comic books is a cool way to try out different voices.

“You will have good luck…”
Encourage your child to write fortune cookie messages. An alternative? Have him write up messages and put them into plastic Easter eggs; hide them around the house or yard.

On your mark, get set … write!
The fastest writer wins. Ask your child to describe the family pet or a banana, give instructions for flying a kite. Start the stopwatch and see how many words she can write in two minutes!
