Five Ways to Avoid Allergy Triggers at Home
Brought to you by
One of the best ways to control your allergy symptoms is to keep your home free of common allergy triggers. Here are five strategies to help.
Improve Your Air Quality
- Keep windows closed and use air conditioning (fans can stir up dust).
- Filter the air from air conditioning and heating vents with HEPA filters.
- Clean your air filters frequently and your air ducts once a year.
- Use a dehumidifier (especially in basements) to keep humidity below 50% and prevent mold growth.
- Don't allow tobacco smoke in the house.
Avoid Allergen Hotbeds
When you can, try to stay out of allergen-heavy areas like:
- Basements
- Crawl spaces
- Garages
- Barns
- Compost heaps
Use a mask if you have to go into those places for extended periods of time.
Keep It Clean
- Vacuum frequently.
- Wash bed linens and towels in hot water (at least 130°F)
- Put laundry in the dryer right away
- Don't hang laundry outside to dry where it can collect pollen
- Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning, vacuuming or painting to limit dust and chemical exposure
Allergy-Free Decorating
- Avoid Venetian blinds and curtains that can't be washed
- Don’t store firewood indoors
- Remember that carpeting, throw rugs and indoor plants can also trigger allergies
Pets
- Keep pets outside as much as possible — and especially keep them out of the bedroom
- Brush pets outside to remove loose hair, dander and other allergens
- Have someone else tend to litter or cages
- Have someone else wash your pet weekly to reduce dander
- Consider using an air filtration system
