Energize Your Space: Easy Decorating Ideas
Provided by P&G Everyday Solutions
Tired of your decor? "Redecorating your home is a great opportunity to showcase your personality and creativity," says Kathleen Wilson, author of Quick Decorating Ideas Under $20: The Budget Decorator's Bible. "Today, people need a place that is uniquely theirs, to de-stress and to appreciate the things that really matter in life." These easy redecorating ideas will reenergize your rooms — and give you a whole new outlook.
Personalize Your Pictures
"Inject yourself and your family into your home with personal items. Photos, vacation finds or ball-game tickets in a frame all bring interest and life to your rooms," says Wilson. To update your photo display, replace outdated photos with new prints. Displaying postcards or your child's artwork is an inexpensive and sentimental alternative to family photos.
Light Up a Room
Lighting is often overlooked in decorating. To add interest to a room, the American Lighting Association suggests adding directional lighting that spotlights a plant or special item. Moll Anderson, in her book Change Your Home, Change Your Life, suggests installing a dimmer switch to add variety to a room's lighting levels.
Find a Focal Point
When redecorating your room, go for quality over quantity. Find one item that can be the centerpiece or focal point of your room and use that as your inspiration. In their book Beautiful Home on a Budget, Emilie Barnes and Yoli Brogger recommend giving attention to an art print, musical instrument or family heirloom by assigning it a special place in the room.
Go Green
Plants and flowers bring a dull room to life. Houseplants improve the air quality indoors and provide plenty of natural beauty. Anderson suggests that sugar bowls, tea cups and candle votives make great vases for low-table arrangements. Embrace fall by hanging a new wreath or displaying fresh flowers, such as sunflowers, tiger lilies or mums, around your home.
Dress Up Your Knobs
Spruce up your cabinets and dressers by painting or replacing the knobs and fixtures. New knobs can be found online or at most home improvement stores. They are easy to install and an inexpensive way to add personalization.
Simplify
Clearing the clutter can be just as effective as adding something new. Try using decorative boxes or attractive shelving. Barnes and Brogger suggest using a decorative screen to hide unsightly objects or messy areas. They also recommend hanging decorative baskets to minimize clutter. Antique trunks are excellent for storage and make greatcoffee tables as well.
Get Fresh
Candles are always a nice touch to complete the mood of a room. "Fill a pretty bowl with seeds, nuts or acorns and nestle a pillar candle into the bowl," Wilson says, "Don't wait for company; light those candles at dinner time, game time and family time."
