7 Simple Ways to Show Your Pet Love
Brought to you by P&G Everyday Solutions
Pets come in all shapes and sizes. From Baxter the bulldog to Sally the Siamese,
all pets have one thing in common: They need your love. But with hectic workdays,
followed by busy evenings filled with after-school activities or errands, it's easy
to forget your furry friend from time to time. Follow these seven simple tips to
show your prime playmate how much you care.
- Play with your pet. If it sounds simple, that's because it is!
Play fetch with Spot during the commercials of your favorite sitcom, or cuddle up
with Fluffy on the couch for movie night. You don't have to alter your daily routine
to show your buddy a little attention.
- Keep the menu nutritious. You feed your family well-balanced, tasty
meals — why not do the same for your best friend? Your pet's diet is crucial
for growth in the early years, and for maintaining good health down the road.
- Exercise with your pet. Besides feeding your playmates the right
foods, you need to give them a good workout once in awhile. Just like humans, pets
with lower activity levels tend to gain excess weight. Do something good for you
both, and go for a walk or run every morning before work or in the evenings after
dinner. Not only will you both get exercise, but you'll spend much-needed quality
time with your trusted friend.
- Don't forget to register. It's easy to forget the pet-owning basics
from time to time, but it's important to register your pets as required and have
them wear their tags at all times.
- Find the right vet. Your pet's vet could almost be considered his
next of kin after the immediate family, so choosing the right one is crucial. Finding
one close to home is a good idea, but your vet's interaction with your pet is key.
Also of vital importance are your vet's credentials. You want a well-educated, experienced
vet to take care of your loved one. While young pets will be at the vet frequently
for vaccinations, adult animals only need annual appointments. Vet visits should
increase again once your pet reaches the senior stage.
- Maintain vaccinations. The type of vaccinations your pet needs
will differ from animal to animal, and from life stage to life stage. Young pets
are at the greatest risk for diseases, so it's important to take your new puppy
or kitten to the vet right away. But don't forget about your older animals —
they're at risk, too. Keep in mind that different animals need different vaccinations.
While dogs and cats both get rabies shots, the extent of their other treatments
will be dissimilar. It's best to talk to your vet about what vaccinations are right
for your pet.
- Don't leave them out in the cold. Many animals are becoming outdoor
pets these days. With big yards and built-in fences, there's no harm in letting
your pets enjoy the fresh air — day and night. However, unless Fido is used
to cold weather, it’s a good idea to bring him inside when the temperature drops
below freezing.
You most likely adopted your pet for affection, fun and companionship — so
remember to give them the same benefits!
